  36.      The author of MINIX, Andrew S. Tanenbaum, has written a book describing
  37. how operating systems in general and MINIX in particular work internally.
  38. The book describes an earlier version (and includes a source listing), but
  39. it is still useful for understanding how MINIX works inside, even if some
  40. details are now different.  The bibliographic information is:

  52. 9. MINIX DEMONSTRATION DISKS
  53.      MINIX demonstration disks for the PC line, the Atari, the Macintosh and
  54. the SparcStation (but for technical reasons, not the Amiga) are available.
  55. The IBM, Atari and SparcStation versions can be obtained by anonymous FTP over
  56. the internet.  All three can be obtained from Prentice-Hall (see below).  The
  57. demo disks contained a very, very stripped down version of MINIX, just to give
  58. an idea of what it can do.  The demo disk is accompanied by a 30-page manual.
  59.  
  60.      To get either free demo disk and its manual, use ftp to connect to
  61. ftp.cs.vu.nl (192.31.231.42) and look in pub/minix.  There is a file READ_ME
  62. that is there and tells you what is in the directory and how to use it.

  166.      If you have previously purchased MINIX from Prentice-Hall, you can get
  167. a discount of $60, but only if you order by mail and include the label from
  168. the original PH boot disk (or the entire disk) with your letter.  Not valid for

  174. 11. LEGAL STATUS OF MINIX
  175.      Although MINIX is supplied with the complete source code, it is
  176. copyrighted software.  It is not public domain.  It is also not like GNU.
  177. However, the copyright owner, Prentice-Hall has granted permission to bona
  178. fide universities to copy the software for use in courses and in university
  179. research projects.  It is also permitted for MINIX owners to change the
  180. software to suit their needs and to distribute diff listings containing
  181. their changes freely.  The shrink-wrap license that comes with MINIX states
  182. that you may legally make two backup copies of the software.  Prentice-Hall
  183. is being much less strict than other software vendors.  Please do not abuse
  184. this.  Companies that wish to embed MINIX in commercial systems or sell
  185. MINIX-based products should call (212) 753-7753 to discuss licensing terms.

  188. 12. NEWS ABOUT MINIX
  189.      Since its introduction in January 1987, there has been a large an
  190. active USENET newsgroup about MINIX, comp.os.minix.  It currently has
  191. about 25,000 members.  Over 12,000 messages have been posted to this
  192. group so far.  These messages have contained questions, bug reports,
  193. bug fixes, new software, and diff listings to allow current users to
  194. update to new releases for free.  It is the intention to continue this
  195. policy into the indefinite future.  MINIX users on Bitnet can be put on
  196. a mailing list by sending mail to: info-minix-request@udel.edu.  Various
  197. archives store newsgroup traffic for newcomers to the newsgroup.

  200. 13. FUTURE PLANS
  201.      The major current project is bringing MINIX into conformance with
  202. the IEEE POSIX P1003.1 and P1003.2 standards.  This will (hopefully)
  203. occur with V2.0, perhaps in 1992.  V2.0 will also be provided with an
  204. ANSI C compiler.  Various people are currently working on 32-bit versions
  205. of MINIX for the 386, and numerous other projects.  To keep up, subscribe
  206. to the comp.os.minix newsgroup.

  209. 14. ANSI C, PASCAL, AND MODULA 2 COMPILERS FOR MINIX
  210.      A package containing the following  compilers is available commercially:

  215.          "Report on The Programming Language Modula-2", in "Programming in

  219.           with a few small exceptions

  221. Also, a Modula-2 makefile generator and some utilities for handling
  222. relocatable object files are included (aal, nm, size, strip, etc).
  223. Complete libraries for ANSI C, Pascal, and Modula 2 are provided.

  232. Many problems with the old Minix C compiler have been resolved:

  252. 15. SunOS Minix
  253.  
  254. SunOS Minix is a version of Minix that runs as a user process on Sun 4s
  255. running SunOS.  In SunOS Minix, the processor time used is the time
  256. allocated to the SunOS process running SunOS Minix, each file system is
  257. a SunOS file, and the console is /dev/tty of the SunOS process.  Also,
  258. it is possible for multiple users to log into a single instance of
  259. SunOS Minix.
  260.  
  261. SunOS Minix runs as a user process, so does not require a dedicated
  262. machine.  Also, multiple instance of SunOS Minix can run on a single
  263. machine simultaneously without interfering with each other.
  264.  
  265. SunOS Minix is produced by applying a set of patches to Mac Minix 1.5
  266. (both 1.5.10.0 and 1.5.10.1 can be used) or PC Minix 1.5.  Also, Atari
  267. Minix has been used as the base version by at least one person.  The
  268. SunOS Minix patches are available via anonymous ftp from
  269. plains.nodak.edu in the file pub/Minix/sun/smx_1_00.tar.Z, with some
  270. useful SunOS Minix binaries (including tcsh and Micro emacs) in the
  271. file pub/Minix/sun/smx_bin.tar.Z.

  277. 16. WHERE CAN I GET PAST POSTINGS AND PROGRAMS?
  278.      Many sites keep archives of MINIX-related material, ranging from
  279. archives of articles posted to more organized repositories of programs posted
  280. to the net.  The complete MINIX distribution is NOT (repeat NOT) available
  281. from any online archive.  This is not permitted.  Only the newsgroup traffic is
  282. stored there.

  305. 16.1.  File Transfer on the Internet
  306.      If you are on the Internet, you can get files from many places with the
  307. file  transfer  protocol  ("FTP").  When connecting to the host system, use
  308. the user-name "anonymous" and any password.  Most systems will ask for your
  309. "ident"  as a password.  It is considered good etiquette to use either your
  310. login name or mail address when asked.  Once connected, look for a "README"
  311. file which should give further information about the archive.

  562. of the files will be shipped using an encoding scheme that allows logical
  563. lines to be split up into many physical lines. On Bitnet, this is normally
  564. the IBM "DISK DUMP" or "NETDATA" format, and for ther networks it is "List-
  565. serv Punch".

  567.      Listserv Punch was designed by Listserv's author and is designed to send
  568. files with lines longer than 80 characters thru the Bitnet gateways. A
  569. special program to decode the file once it has arrived at your site.
  570. Information on obtaining a program to decode listserv punch format is sent

  643. This is a list of machines that MINIX has reportedly run on.  An updated
  644. version of this list will be posted when a sufficient number of entries
  645. have been added or changed or when requested.

  647. PC MINIX
  648. ========
  649. Version 1.0 is the version in Tanenbaum's book, "Operating Systems: Design
  650. and Implementation".  Version 1.1 is the initially released version and
  651. the differences between it and 1.0 are minor.  Version 1.2 was released
  652. next.  Version 1.3 is currently available from Prentice-Hall.
  653. Versions 1.4 and 1.5 exist, but are not yet available from Prentice-Hall.

  655. Version 2.0 is in the planning stages and should be available late next
  656. year.

  658. Only compatibility with PC MINIX 1.3 and greater is now reported in this

  674. represents a portion of a report received by the editor.  Each entry is a
  675. report of how well a specific version of Minix worked on a specific
  676. machine or other piece of hardware.  Each entry appears as a single line

  688.       subversion of 1.5.0 is 0.  If the subversion is not known, an 'x' will
  689.       be found in the field.
  690.   4 - Report Status.  This will be Y (Yes, MINIX worked on the version),
  691.       N (No, MINIX did not work on this version) or P (Yes, MINIX worked
  692.       on the version, but a patch was required).
  693.   5 - Date of Report.  When the report was received.
  694.   6 - Report Submitter.  This is a reference to the individual who
  695.       submitted the report.  A list of submitters is included with the
  696.       report.
  697.   7 - Additional Comments.  Additional, useful comments added by the
  698.       submitter.

  701. the other is ST MINIX 1.x.  Other sections may be added as needed (e.g.,
